Timber frame buildings
|
Timber frame replaces the typical block inner skin whilst the outer skin is brickwork as usual.
I am building a house and this knocks about 30k off the build cost. Anyone got any knowledge of this build method ? Any reason to avoid it ?

Very common in the United States, not sure why it wouldn't work here?

Plenty of homes are timber frame these days, I've never heard of anyone having trouble of getting a mortgage on one. Also, because the roof goes on before the brickwork is started it is watertight quicker, very handy in the winter months

I'm building over the winter months so the roof going up early is a major advantage. I've seen a few go up in the past and have always though that they looked pretty flimsy. Would be interested to know if anyone had a disasters with them.

They are not flimsy at all, it's just a different way of doing things

We built a timber frame house from Potton (google them) about five years ago... no problems at all, you clad the house in whatever material you want - brick, weatherboard, stone, flint etc...
Our frame went up in about ten days, the roof was on two weeks later and the windows went in at the same time... didn't 't rain once in that four week period!
Would have no reservations.

SIPs buildings give you habitable roof space and are incredibly thermally efficient. The National Science Foundation build a centre 200 miles from the magnetic north pole out of them. Never heard of anybody getting turned down for a mortgage and they meet and exceed current fire regs.

Yes, no difference in value.

Speed is the factor as mentioned, building with blocks is almost antiquated now. Buildings never burn but the contents do, plasterboard and insulation mean the timber is never really exposed.
There are plenty of competent timber frame companies about that design, supply and fix your frame then leave for you to build your finishing skin.
Room in the roof use attic trusses.
